A top Jewish Democratic fund-raiser helped shield the former mistress of John Edwards from public attention. Fred Baron, a Texas trial lawyer who was top the fund-raiser for Edwards’ failed presidential bid, helped pay for Rielle Hunter to move from Edwards’ home state of North Carolina to a $3 million home in Santa Barbara, Calif., with her baby.
News accounts said Baron wanted to shield Hunter, who had worked for the Edwards campaign as a videographer, from tabloid attention. Edwards, a former North Carolina senator who ran for vice president in 2004, confessed Friday to a brief affair in 2006, although he denied fathering the baby.
