A U.S. senator reportedly said he doubts that Syrian President Bashar Assad is capable of making peace with Israel, even if he wanted to. On Thursday, Ha’aretz quoted Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), who met Assad in Damascus last weekend, voicing doubts in a secret report to Jerusalem that the Syrian leader is fully in control of his country.
