Announcement was made here last night of a gift of $600,000 from Abraham Shiffman, Detroit philanthropist, to the Israel Education Fund of the United Jewish Appeal, to build a high school in Tirat Hacarmel, a new immigrant town on the outskirts of Haifa, and also to provide Hebrew University scholarships for future high school teachers.
Max M. Fisher, of Detroit, UJA general chairman, made the announcement on behalf of Mr. Shiffman and the Shiffman Foundation. The school will fill secondary education needs primarily for the children of North African and Asian immigrants who constitute the majority of the population in Tirat Hacarmel.
Mr. Shiffman, whose philanthropic gifts total more than $3,000,000 in contributions to educational and medical institutions in the United States, stated that “there is a great need to close the cultural gap between Israel’s newest immigrants, most of whom are from underdeveloped countries and those who are of European origin.” The new school will be named the Moses and Sarah Shiffman High School in honor of Mr. Shiffman’s parents who were immigrants to the United States.
