A resolution adopted by the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant denomination in the US. opposing “any and all forms of anti-Semitism” was praised yesterday by the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith as “another milestone in Christian-Jewish relations.” The resolution, approved by 13,000 members attending the group’s annual meeting in Philadelphia, called anti-Semitism “a serious problem for the church” and an “un-Christian attitude” which had led to “brutal persecutions of the Jews in numerous countries and societies.”
Rabbi Solomon Bernards, director of the ADL Interreligious Cooperation department, commended the statement as “a forthright, courageous and constructive act” which “will go far in building new models of cooperation between the Southern Baptist and Jewish communities.” He noted that the ADL has conducted many projects in education and social concerns with the Southern Baptist Convention over the years.
