Max Adler of the Adler Planetarium now under construction at the north end of the lake front island off Roosevelt Road, announced the appointment of Dr. Philip Fox, professor of astronomy at Northwestern university and director of its Dearborn observatory, as the director of the new institution.
Dr. Fox. who served in France as assistant chief of staff of the 7th division, is prominent in the ranks of American astronomers. He is secretary of the astronomical section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His contributions to the field of scientific knowledge include original works on stellar physics and stellar spectroscopy.
Following the opening of the planetarium, Dr. Fox will present a series of fifty lecture-demonstrations intended to famiilarize the public with the workings and purposes of the institution.
New impetus was given the work of construction by Mr. Adler’s announcement yesterday that the south park board has finally approved plans for the building. It will be opened to the public early next January, he said.
In addition to the planetarium, which is the first to be erected in the United States, the building will provide quarters for an astronomical museum and library.
