The AFL-CIO five-member good will delegation concluded its week-long visit to Israel at a farewell reception here attended by President Ephraim Katzir and Premier Golda Meir. Lane Kirkland, secretary-treasurer of the AFL-CIO who headed the delegation, brought greetings from AFL-CIO President George Meany and reaffirmed the political. moral and financial support of Israel by the American labor movement.
At a reception in the headquarters of the Histadrut, Kirkland told the Israeli trade union’s executive: “Whatever shall be your decision in relation to the future in the Middle East we shall back you. Your fight is our fight and as a central issue at our recent convention. For us. Israel is an example that defense and progress can go on together.”
Yerucham Meshel. acting secretary general of Histadrut, hailed the solidarity and support of the American labor movement and stressed that Israeli workers “want peace, but not at any price.” He underscored the need for international labor cooperation to confront the energy crisis and pledged continuing solidarity with American labor. The delegation included the presidents and officials of the International Longshoremen’s Association. Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union.
