Resolutions calling on Great Britain to facilitate Jewish immigration to Palestine and urging intensification of the anti-Nazi boycott were adopted by about 250 delegates attending the first national conference of the women’s division of the American Jewish Congress at the Hotel Barbizon-Plaza yesterday.
In an address at the afternoon session, Miriam Beard, daughter of Prof. Charles A. Beard, warned that Germany is being transformed into a “soldier state” which, she declared, is a grave challenge to democracy. Dr. Gerhart Segar, exfled former member of the German Reichstag, declared that the majority of Germans are not in favor of Hitler but are prevented by Nazi coercion from making their wishes known.
The Nazis, he asserted, have two war aims: the erection of a “greater Germany” and the domination of the world by the “Aryans.” He warned that Nazi propaganda is being spread in the United States.
At a luncheon earlier in the day in honor of Mrs. Stephen S. Wise, Bernard S. Deutsch greeted the delegates in his capacity of acting mayor. He said their movement “bids fair to become one of the most potent forces in American Jewish life.”
Rabbi Stephen S. Wise was presented with a portrait of his wife, who was later reelected president of the women’s division.
Mrs. Wise called for increased interest among Jewish women in the fate of Jews throughout the world. Mrs. Richard Gottheil, head of the Women’s League for Palestine, praised the American Jewish Congress.
Officers elected at the conference are: Mrs. Sol Rosenbloom, honorary president; Mrs. Wise, president; Mrs. Samuel Cahan, Mrs. Edward Cahan, Mrs. George L. Cohen, Mrs. Gottheil, Mrs. Nathan D. Perlman, Mrs. Jacob M. Ross, vice-presidents; Mrs. Bernard S. Deutsch, treasurer; Miss Beth Levin Siegel, financial secretary, and Mrs. Benjamin Lazaron, recording secretary.
A resolution was adopted deploring the attempt in European countries to deprive Jews and other minorities of equality rights. “An unremitting battle to establish equality rights to Jews and to create positive values in Jewish life” was pledged.
Other resolutions were passed greeting Mrs. Wise and expressing sorrow at the death of Jane Addams.
