Alfred M. Cohen, President of the Independent Order B’nai Brith, and Dr. Boris D. Bogen, Executive Secretary, addressed a large meeting last night at the King Edward Hotel, held under the auspices of the B’nai Brith lodge of Toronto.

President Cohen, who was accorded an ovation, praised the Toronto Jewish community and its B’nai Brith lodge for its activities, especially for its part in the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies. Mr. Cohen related that on his European tour he met with different languages and many shades of opinion but the B’nai Brith in its welfare and cultural work, acted as a connecting link. The preamble to the constitution of the Order, taking as its mission “uniting Israelites in the work of promoting their highest interests and those of humanity,” has been translated into action, although there are still some communities where one section is prejudiced against another.

Describing the history of the Order, the President mentioned the successful work of the Anti-Defamation League. It is the aim of the B’nai Brith to show the Jew as he is. Anti-Semitism can never flourish in America, he declared. The Jews have survived everywhere because Judaism has saved the Jew. Because of this, the Hillel Foundations were started in the colleges to create consciousness in the Jewish boys and girls, he stated.

Dr. Bogen, in his address, stressed the need of education which must be intensive. This problem needs the united action of all Jewry, he stated.
