Despite Israel’s confirmation that it has formally extended recognition to Algeria, the Algerian Government has, thus far, made no comment whatever in regard to its plans regarding Israel, it was reported here today from Algiers.
The Government of Benyoussef Ben Khedda, at Algiers, is believed inclined to avoid taking any part in the Arab-Israeli conflict. On the other hand, it is believed that Ben Khedda wants to avoid showing any cordiality to Israel that could be criticized by his principal internal opponent, Vice-Premier Mohammed Ben Bella. The latter has visited Cairo three times, conferring with Egypt’s President Gamal Abdel Nasser, and is considered ready to follow the Arab League policies of anti-Israelism.
(In New York, Israel’s Ambassador Avraham Harman, who was asked on a radio-television broadcast about his country’s relations with Algeria, stated: “We wish the Algerians well, and we stand for the principle of national independence. We welcome the Evian agreement and the emergency of Algeria as a result of those agreements to independence. We wish them well. We are prepared to cooperate with them as we have cooperated with all other newly-independent countries.”)
