A midnight order of the day issued by Brig. Gen. Yigal Yadin, chief of staff of the Israel Army, today placed all of Israel on a war-time emergency basis. The action was designed to coincide with the opening of autumn maneuvers by Israel’s military units.

In his order of the day, Gen. Yadin said: “We must not slacken our efforts for defense of the state, since our enemies–who are arming themselves–have not yet made peace. Our success in these maneuvers is a guarantee of our success on the battle-field,” he added.

Mock battles, staged by ground, naval and air units, will take place in various parts of the country and will seek to determine the efficiency and mobility of the Jewish state’s armed forces. Members of the reserve were also ordered to report for participation in the maneuvers. The Voice of Israel, official Israel radio, is keeping up a continuous broadcast of military orders to all participants in the war games.
