Important declarations concerning Jewish rights in Palestine and the rest of the world were made during the last few days several Allied statesmen and prominent British political figures, in connection with the Jewish National Fund Victory Campaign.
“There must be no repetition of the heart-breaking frustration which followed the last war when not even an attempt was made to keep the promises so freely made for a better world to be built when the fighting was over,” declared Dutch Minister of Education Dr. G. Bolkestein, addressing a meeting in Liverpool. He added: “One of the greatest unkept promises was that of supporting the Jewish endeavor to regain their native country as a home for many of this unhappy and tortured race. It must be different after this war.” Boelkestein urged Christians the world over to repay the debt owed to Jews by supporting the struggle for a Jewish National Home.
Louis De Brouckeres, former Belgian senator now connected with the Belgian Government-in-exile, referring to President Roosevelt’s statement that “America can be free only if the whole world is free,” said, “I went liberty for all nations, for my own country which was amid the last of Hitler’s victims and for the Jews and German people who were the first of his victims.”
Sir Patrick Dollan, Lord Provost of Glesgow, said: “Whatever peace settlement is drawn up after the war must insure all people the right to live their own lives in their own way – this includes the Jewish people who went a home in Palestine,” Other speakers at various meetings were: Captain Victor Cazalet, Conservative M.P., the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Graham White M.P. and others.
