Sen. George A. Smathers of Florida today offered an amendment to foreign aid legislation to reduce the authorization for economic development assistance to Israel and the Near East in order to increase the sum for Latin America.

Sen. Smathers’ amendment would cut the Near Eastern authorization from $130, 000, 000 to $124, 000, 000 or approximately 4. 6 percent. The Near Eastern authorization contains funds for the Arab states as well as Israel. The exact amounts are not known but it has been announced by the State Department that the Arabs will receive more than previously while Israel is to get less than last year.
