American Jewry needs a religious revival, Louis Marshall told an audience at the Institutional Synagogue Sunday night.
“How many of our young men and women, born and educated in this country have studied the word of God?” Mr. Marshall queried. “I am afraid that there are comparatively few. I have no doubt that they have read all the latest novels, or at least those that the newspapers advise, which they shouldn’t; that they have read many things that are supposed to be scientific, particularly the psychology of Freud and can discuss the economic vagaries of political writers and can tell you of a great many things that are not so, and yet they have had at their command the greatest literature that the world has yet produced, the Bible.
“I believe that a religious revival is necessary. There are in New York City, 500,000 Jewish children of whom not more than one quarter are getting a Jewish training.”
