An American Jewish conductor led the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus in a concert at the Vatican last week to mark Pope John Paul II’s 80th birthday. Led by Gilbert Levine, whose mother is a Holocaust survivor, the orchestra played Haydn’s Creation during a concert Thursday night that capped a day of celebration marked by an outdoor mass celebrated by thousands of priests, bishops and cardinals.
