An Italian cardinal was widely criticized after he said the nation’s government should block Muslim immigration in order to preserve the country’s Roman Catholic majority. The far-right National Alliance party was among the few groups to agree with the comments of Cardinal Giacomo Biffi, who has sometimes been mentioned as a successor to Pope John Paul II.
