The Bishop of Chichester, one of the most influential Anglican Church leaders today urged the British Government to approach Germany, through a neutral power, with a proposal that the Nazi authorities allow Jews, especially women and children, to leave Germany and German-occupied territories.
The Bishop, writing in the London Times, also suggested that Britain ask all neutral states to grant temporary refuge to the Jews, under a guarantee that as many as possible will be evacuated after the war. He further asked that all the Allied nations and neutral countries be asked to cooperate “in a comprehensive treatment” of the entire Jewish problem. “Our only answer to the tragic cries of the Jews is steps to be taken now, before it is too late to effect their deliverance,” the Bishop concluded.
The Scottish people’s sympathy with the suffering Jews was manifested at an inter-denominational protest meeting in Glasgow yesterday. Among those addressing the gathering were the Lord Provost of the city, the Bishop of Glasgow, the Reverend Thompson, representing the Moderator of the Church of Scotland, and Reverend Matthews, representing the Catholic Church in Scotland.
The World Jewish Congress today echoed the demand of the Bishop of Chichester, proposing that the United Nations sot up an international body to approach Germany via neutral intermediaries; and that a $4,000,000 fund be established to finance the rescue of the Jews.
