Anglican leaders have convened in Jerusalem to discuss a crisis in their church.
About 300 conservative Anglican clerics are meeting in the Israeli capital this week to debate a response to the appointment of the church’s first openly homosexual bishop in the United States.
The conservatives represent about half of the Anglican church’s 77 million followers and are largely based in the developing world. They have threatened to break with their liberal Western colleagues over gay issues.
The Jerusalem meeting, titled the Global Anglican Future Conference, will be followed next month by the Lambeth conference, a once-in-a-decade Anglican summit where the church decides policy.
