The 17th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto revolt against the Nazis will be commemorated globally this weekend according to the World Jewish Congress here. There will be special services and ceremonies throughout the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Africa, as well as in Israel and a number of communities in the Far East, including the Philippines.
Some communities will be marking the occasion for the first time. These include Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. World Jewish Congress sections in Britain, France, Belgium, and Sweden have scheduled mass meetings in conjunction with local community organizations, including youth groups, associations of Nazi victims and Jewish veterans. Services and meetings have been set for New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia and many other cities.
Dr. Isaac Schwarzbart, director of the World Jewish Congress’ Organization Department, which has been primarily responsible for annually mobilizing world Jewry to mark the heroism of the Warsaw Ghetto fighters, said that the American Jewish Congress and the Zionist Organization of America had planned a number of United States observances.
