Reliable sources said today, according to Havas News Agency, that the Italian anti-French campaign was merely the prelude to a vast pan-Italian movement based on racial foundations which the regime hoped to launch. From now on, it was said, Italy’s new “Aryanism” will play a formidable part in the foreign policy arsenal. The new Fascist code to be published before the end of the year will establish the “Italianism” of all emigrants, including those who have Italian origins but hold citizenship in their countries of emigration.
Italian aspirations, regarded in this light, would stretch far beyond the Mediterranean and Europe to the entire world, with anti-Semitism serving as merely one aspect of the new imperialism. Contrary to German anti-Semitism, which excludes from “Aryan” ranks those who have only a mixture of Jewish blood, the Italian theories reject only those who are 100 percent Jewish. This attitude thus increases the possibilities of Italian claims on the basis of race, since the children of an Italian and a foreigner could still be regarded as Italian.
The development of anti-Semitism into pan-Italianism is now progressing imperceptibly but surely, with possible far-reaching consequences for Italy’s international ambitions in the future, French circles believe.
