Anti-jewish Terror Mounts in Rumania; Yiddish Curbed in Bukovina

Special orders for the province of Bukovina, where a majority of Rumania’s Jews live, were announced today for the asserted purpose of removing any pretext for anti-Jewish action against persons or property.

Ten fires were started last night in synagogues and factories and shops belonging to Jews at Czernowitz. Two persons arrested for incendiarism were identified as members of the banned Iron Guard, whose leader, Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, and 13 aides were killed yesterday.

Under the new order only the Rumanian language must be used in public offices and in places of business in Bukovina. Jews not able to use Rumanian will lose their Rumanian nationality, and thereafter will be unable to find employment. Business men who fail to display the sign “Rumanian Spoken Here” in their offices and shops will be forced to close their places of business for three days. Upon a second offense they will be forced to close for eight days, and upon a third offense the closing will be final.

Meanwhile, all Jews denationalized in the recent revision of citizenships were forbidden to engage in any business or to be employed in any firms.

(Orders to police to “shoot to kill” if Iron Guardists resist arrest. A round-up of all members was ordered. Hundreds were seized in Bucharest, Mano and other cities.

(Retirement on pension of more than twenty army officers, including a number of colonels and lieutenant colonels, who were suspected of being sympathetic toward Codreanu.

(Seizure at Cluj, according to unofficial reports, of one of the assessing of Dr. Francis Stefanescu-Goanga, rector of Cluj University.

(Redoubling of guards at centers of Jewish population, especially at Czernowitz and Temesvar, where police reported fears that the Iron Guard extremists would attempt new terroristic acts against Jews.)
