There will still be large numbers of dis##laced persons in occupied territories next winter, even if the International Refugee organization begins functioning as scheduled on July 1, Brig. Gen. Ralph H. Tate, former deputy chief of staff to Gen. Mark Clark, who until recently was U.S. commender in Austria, said today, addressing the annual meeting of the Middle Atlantic foregion of the Joint Distribution Committee.
Gen. Tate told the more than 500 persons who attended the conference that ##ile some progress towards rehabilitation of the Jewish DP’s had been made during 946, any slackening of aid now will plunge them into despair and destroy their ##orale, which, he stressed, must be maintained until they can be resettled in per##nent homes outside of Germany or Austria. “If everyone in the U.S. could see, as I have, the suffering of the distressed people of war-torn countries and see how grate##ful they are for any help which gives them hope of becoming useful individuals again, I am sure the people of this country would turn their pockets inside out,” Gen. Tate said, appealing for funds for the United Jewish Appeal.Moritz M. Gottlieb, of Allentown, Pa., was re-elected chairman of the Middle ##tlantic region at a business session this morning.
