For the first time since the foundation of Israel, an Arab citizen presided today as mayor of a large city with a mixed Arab-Jewish population.

In adjoining Acre, M. Habishl, the Deputy Mayor, an Arab, was invested with all mayoral powers as Acting Mayor of the city, serving in place of Mayor Y. Gadish, a Jew, who was unable to function in office because of illness.
