United States, British and French diplomats in both Israel and the Arab countries are now more hopeful regarding the prospects for an Israeli-Arab peace than they have been at any time since the hostilities of 1948-49, the New York Times reported today from Jerusalem.
“They are hopeful in spite of recent tough talk by both sides at the United Nations and the Arab League’s efforts to torpedo German reparation payments to Israel. These, they believe, are in the nature of window dressing, covering up what is really going on,” the report said.
“The steady rise of Maj. Gen. Mohammed Naguib to absolute power in Egypt combined with the series of gestures by Israel has resulted in the conclusion that their efforts might lead to success –if not in the next few months, quote possibly within the next year, “the report stated.
