Mohammed Mahgoub, commissioner general of the Arab League’s Israel Boycott Office since its creation in the early 1950s, has retired following reports of pressure by Egypt and Saudi Arabia. According to the Arab League, Mahgoub has given up the job solely because he is over retirement age. However, it was reported last December that Egypt would propose his replacement following his criticism of Egypt for allowing the Ford Motor Company to set up a factory in Egypt in contravention of boycott regulations. Saudi Arabia was also said to prefer somebody more “realistic” for this highly sensitive post. He was succeeded by his deputy Sayyid Al-Barkai. (By Maurice Samuelson.)
