An American tourist, Charles Harris of Nebraska, who strayed from the Jordan-held area of Jerusalem into “no-man’s-land” was shot and killed by Arab Legion guards this week-end in the belief that he was a Jew.
The man, who apparently had lost his way, was moving toward the Israel lines on Mt. Zion when the Legionnaires opened fire. He was killed instantly. United Nations personnel rushed to the spot but the Legionnaires refused to accept the body, asserting that the man was a Jew. He had spent the past week touring Jordan.
