Arab diplomats made renewed representations to the United States Government today against the picketing of the Cleopatra, a UAR ship, in New York harbor. The ship is being picketed by the Seafarers’ International Union in protest against Arab restrictions imposed on American ships that trade with Israel.
(Picketing by the Seafarers’ International Union and the International Longshoremen’s Union of the Egyptian passenger-cargo vessel, the Cleopatra, at an East River dock in New York City continued today for the 21st day as both sides awaited a ruling by the Federal Appeals Court in New York on a bid by the owners of the ship, the Khedivial Mail Lines of Alexandria, for an injunction to halt the picketing.)
The United Arab Republic today asked the United States to re-route four American ships bound for Egypt and Syria with 50,000 tons of surplus grain obtained through the Department of Agriculture. The UAR made clear that it still desires the surplus wheat and flour cargoes but that the American ships transporting the commodities, virtually an American gift, would not be serviced in Arab ports.
