Commenting on improved conditions in Palestine, the Times Jerusalem correspondent declares that the majority of Palestine Arabs are “reasonably content” to cooperate with the British Government on the basis of its policy statement of last May.
The promptness with which all neighboring Arab states and Turkey as well, the correspondent continues, have espoused the cause of the Allies reminds them that after all the great democratic powers stand for things the Arabs themselves cherish and they can be counted upon to allow them more room for national expression and development than a world dominated by Nazi ideals.
The country has therefore enjoyed greater peace and security than has existed for a number of years, the correspondent declares, and even in wartime there has been a relaxation of security measures. The one unfortunate element of the disturbances he writes, is the habitual criminal who cannot afford to stop fighting and now again resorts to unvarnished banditry in self-protection.
Release of a large number of Arabs who were under detention has caused the keenest satisfaction among the Arabs. In announcing their release, the correspondent states, the General Officer Commanding explained it was made possible by an improvement in the conditions of general security and expressed the hope that future conditions would warrant additional releases.
The Arab press warmly welcomes the step and expresses the conviction that more releases will be made as the country “regains its health.”
