President Peron today reiterated his promise that Argentina will support the demand for the establishment of a Jewish National Home in Palestine. when the Palestine issue is brought up before the United Nations. The President’s assurance was given in a statement to the press in connection with the decision of the British Government to submit the Palestine problem to the General Assembly of the U.N.
A small group of Peronist Jews who visited the President last week, today announced the establishment of a new organization to be known as the “Organization Israelita Argentina.” Leaders of the group were received today by Home Secretary Angel Borlenghi and submitted the constitution of the new organization.
The new group should not be confused with the “Organizasion Judia Argentina,” which was established several months ago by the opposition to the majority groups in the DAIA, the central representative body of Argentine Jews, and which has not been active so far. It is believed that the new organization will urge Jewish industrialists, businessmen and professionals to join its ranks, emphasizing that membership in the organization will indicate support of the present government.
The “Mundo Israelita,” a widely read Spanish-language Jewish publication, points out that Peron’s recent statement to a Jewish delegation as well as his order for the admission of 47 Jewish refugees who were banned from Brazil can be considered proof that he is against racial discrimination.
“However,” the article said, “we would not be sincere and we would not consider it honorable as citizens and inhabitants of the Argentine republic, if we were not to point to certain discriminatory attitudes by some government officials, taken against the expressed wishes of the President.” The article says that Peron has ignored the anti-Semitic attitude of the Immigration Office and the anti-Jewish sentiments in public hospitals. The paper opposes the formation of a Jewish Peronist party, emphasizing that Jews in Argentina are members of all parties.
