Ariel Sharon discussed Palestinian terrorism and the withdrawal from the Gaza Strip with Paul Wolfowitz, the U.S. deputy defense secretary. The Israeli prime minister met Wolfowitz on Tuesday night and discussed a range of issues. In his meetings this week with American officials, Sharon has stressed the need for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to crack down on terrorism; a number of Gaza settlements suffered mortar attacks this week after Israeli forces killed three suspected Palestinian arms smugglers.
