Ariel Sharon was due to leave Monday night for Washington, where Iraq was expected to top the agenda of talks with President Bush. Reports ahead of Wednesday’s discussion predicted that Bush would call on Israel to employ “maximum restraint” if attacked by Iraq in the event of an American strike on Baghdad.
