William B. Leaf, president of the Philadelphia council of the American Jewish Congress, has addressed a letter to Governor Pinchot calling his attention to the fact that registrars of the Jewish faith will be prevented from observing the tenets of their religion since Kol Nidre—one of the most sacred prayers in the Jewish calendar—is recited on the evening of September 18, the second day of registration.
“I am wondering,” Mr. Leaf wrote in his letter to the Governor, “whether something could not be done to relieve these registrars from duty on that evening so as to permit them to observe the tenets of their faith.”
It is estimated that about one thousand men and women will be affected by the present ruling.
