The Brooklyn Tablet, militant Catholic weekly, demanded in an editorial yesterday that Aldermanic President Bernard S. Deutsch “publicly denounce the persecution of Catholics in Mexico as carried on under Calles and his puppets.”
“If he does this,” the paper declares, “we will be able to completely appreciate and fully evaluate his claim of inaccurate reporting and his expression of high-minded devotion to religious liberty.”
Mr. Deutsch, informed of the publication’s challenge, declared that he had no knowledge of persecution of Catholics in Mexico and that, if it exists, he is ready and willing to denounce and fight it.
Doubt is cast by the Tablet on Mr. Deutsch’s charge that press misquotations of his statements while in Mexico were entirely responsible for what he declares is misapprehension of his attitude toward the Mexican people.
“Does Mr. Deutsch claim he was inaccurately quoted every time his name appeared in the press?” the newspaper asks. “Did he, in Mexico, repudiate any of these ‘inaccuracies?’ In passing we remark no paper, either accurately or inaccurately, quoted him as voicing no opposition to Mexico’s oppression of Catholics.”
Mr. Deutsch is taxed with cool disregard of persecution of the Catholics, while professing to be a champion of tolerance in his attacks on Nazi Germany and in his status as president of the American Jewish Congress.
