A violent attack on the minorities of Turkey may cost Mahmud Essad Bey, Minister of Justice in the cabinet of Ismet Pasha, his post because the cabinet does not fully share his views. Speaking at a public meeting, Essad Bey said that “the lords of the country are the Turks. The others are merely slaves.” Subsequently he explained that he had not referred to foreign citizens resident in Turkey but to those who are Turks under the constitution but “at the same time claim allegiance to a foreign nation.”
