Attorney General Herbert Brownell, Jr., pledged today that “through humane administration of the laws we are called upon to enforce, we shall endeavor to do our part in the Department of Justice to continue to extend a welcoming hand to immigrants.”

Mr. Brownell addressed a conference at the Town Hall Club here sponsored by the American Council of Voluntary Agencies, Committee on Migration and Refugee Problems, the American Immigration Conference and the National Conference on Naturalization and Citizenship. His theme was “humanizing the administration of the immigration law.”

Mr. Brownell cited President Eisenhower’s State of the Union request for revision of immigration legislation and said he was sure that “the members of the Congress who enacted the Immigration and Nationality Act and the American public desire that the law be administered with good common sense, sound discretion and the application of compassion to circumstances that cry out for relief.”

He failed, however, to spell out any request on behalf of the Immigration Service or the Department of Justice for revision of those sections of the law which have been widely criticized.
