Daniel Auster, one of six Jewish municipal councillors elected here on September 26, on a united Jewish ticket, suddenly resigned from office today. Mr. Auster informed the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that he will issue a statement on his reasons for resigning in the next few days. His sudden withdrawal from office will make a special by-election necessary in the Jewish ward he represented.

A united Jewish ticket to represent all Jewish parties and groups in Jerusalem was achieved only after lengthy and involved negotiations between the various parties. The united front ticket was victorious at the polls, electing every one of the six Jewish candidates endorsed. The Zionist Revisionist party opposed the united ticket and nominated its own candidates in every Jewish ward.

Mr. Auster’s decision to resign came as a surprise in Jewish circles, since he took the leadership in a move to force the Palestine government to appoint a Jew as mayor of Jerusalem. Yesterday a conference of the newly elected Jewish councillors was held and Mr. Auster was delegated to visit Governor Campbell of Jerusalem and place before him the demand of the Jewish councillors.
