Austrian authorities will examine carefully all testimony developed at the Eichmann trial in Israel, and will follow through by arresting all Austrian suspects implicated in war crimes as a result of such testimony, the Government’s two observers at the Eichmann trial announced here today.
The observers, Joseph Wiesinger and Leo Maier, returned here from Jerusalem yesterday. They pointed out that, already, two men named at the Eichmann trial have been arrested for complicity in the murder of Jews. One of the arrested men is Frank Slavik, Eichmann’s bodyguard at Budapest, who was accused of helping Eichmann beat to death a Jewish boy suspected of stealing some fruit off a tree in the garden adjoining Eichmann’s Hungarian headquarters. The other is an ex-Nazi named Nowak, charged with having been an Eichmann accomplice.
All material brought back by the observers, Mr. Wiesinger and Mr. Maier said, will be reviewed, and any persons even partially implicated will be investigated. Meanwhile, police here announced today that authorities at Graz have arrested an Austrian, named Joseph Freuhwirt, as a suspect in the killing of “five or six” Jews after the end of World War II. The man is alleged to have been a member of a group which, in all, murdered eight or nine Jews as the war ended. Freuhwirt, according to the police, has “partly confessed.”
