An Austrian Parliamentary committee accepted today a measure designed to return to former Nazis “Aryanized” property which was taken from them after the liberation and given to its former owners.
At the same time, the committee also approved an appeal, drafted jointly by the People’s Party and the Social Democrats, urging the government to improve restitution legislation for victims of Nazism. Finally, the committee refused to review sentences passed on former Nazis by People’s Courts.
Meanwhile, the trial of six former Austrian policemen charged with the mass murder of Jews in the Polish ghettos during the Nazi occupation of Poland began here today. The six spent seven years in Soviet work camps but were freed and returned to Austria last fall. After numerous protests against their remaining free, and the presentation of new evidence against them, the six ex-policemen were re-arrested.
