Dr. Cyrus Adler, in an address to the American Friends (Quaker) Service Committee, has expressed the hope “that the men and women and the children of this city will have the grace given them to banish bigotry and ill-will.”

“There is no foundation in the racial or religious theories,” he said. “Racialism is a falsehood, and religion, no matter what religion, teaches love and not hate. I am glad to have the opportunity of addressing this statement to the citizens of Philadelphia where my people have lived for more than a century and where in the earlier and happier years bigotry was not only considered improper but almost indecent.”
