An effort by some members of the Mapai Party to work out a rapprochement between Mapai and Rafi, the dissident faction formed by former Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, has resulted thus far in inconclusive statements by Mr. Ben-Gurion and by Mrs. Golda Meir, Mapai’s secretary-general.
Members of a Mapai group seeking reunification with Rafi reported here today that they had discussed possible proposals for rapprochement with Mr. Ben-Gurion at a meeting with him at Sdeh Boker. They said Mr. Ben-Gurion replied he always favored greater unity within the Israeli labor movement but that such unity must be based on “truth and justice and the correction of wrongs.”
Mrs. Meir declared she would always be ready to consider a merger with Rafi, however she told the Mapai secretariat that the merger must be “total” and must include the Rafi group within an “expanding alignment.”
