Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion spent the second day of his state visit to Sweden today visiting points of interest in Stockholm, particularly the city’s mammoth air raid shelter.
After a briefing from Swedish civil defense officials, the Prime Minister was taken to the shelter which is in the heart of Stockholm, located more than 120 feet under one of the city’s biggest churches. The Prime Minister expressed his admiration for the shelter, which is regarded by experts as the best that has been built and capable of sheltering 15,000 people for several days.
The Prime Minister questioned his guides on the protection provided by the shelter against radiation, the percentage contributed by the Government to building such shelters in Sweden and related matters. He was very impressed by the security awareness of the Swedish people.
He had lunch at Foreign Minister Oesten Unden’s home and later visited a technological high school. He spent about an hour at the Stockholm Historical Museum, examining ancient Swedish coins and Viking armor on display there. After attending a reception given by Israel Ambassador Arye Aroch, he had dinner with the executive of the Social Democratic party and trade union.
