A West Berlin street was today named for Dr; Leo Baeck, former chief rabbi of Berlin, who died in London in 1956. Participating in the street-naming ceremonies today were Heinz Galinski, chairman of the Berlin Jewish community; H. Zehlendorf, district mayor, city officials and leading members of the West Berlin Jewish community.
Dr. Baeck, a world leader of Reform Judaism, was held by the Nazis in the There-sienstadt camp during the war; Born in Berlin, he was one of the outstanding leaders of German Jewry; He was also president of B’nai B’rith in Germany. He had visited the United States and lectured as visiting professor at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
