— Yehuda Blum, Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, declared last night that Israel welcomes “any initiative that would bring about the termination of the ongoing massacre of the Christians of Lebanon by the Syrian army of occupation and the terrorist PLO.”
Speaking before students and faculty members at Brown University in Providence, R.I., the Israeli envoy said: “We believe that any initiative aimed at the restoration of the effective authority of the Lebanese government throughout that war-torn country, must provide for the removal of all foreign elements from Lebanese soil.”
Blum, whose remarks were made available here by the Israel UN Mission, said that the Jewish people, who experienced persecution and discrimination throughout its history, “cannot watch with indifference atrocities committed against persecuted minorities anywhere.” He added: “The persecution of the Christians in Lebanon is aggravated by the fact that they seem to have been abandoned by the outside world, including their own co-religionists.”
