B’nai B’rith International denounced the terrorist bombing of the home of one of its leaders in Santiago, Chile, on May 8. The blast seriously damaged the house of Amiti Pilowski, a former president of the B’nai B’rith Santiago Lodge and a representative to the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith.
Neither Pilowski nor anyone in his family was injured. His was the first home of a Jew in Chile singled out by terrorists. Pilowski has also been a frequent participant in B’nai B’rith’s International Symposia, which devote considerable attention to Latin American and Jewish issues.
Dr. Daniel Thursz, executive vice president of B’nai B’rith, said that the Jewish service organization is “greatly distressed” by the bombing, which it views as “an ugly act of anti-Semitism.” Thursz said that B’nai B’rith “has gone directly to the government of Chile to urge a thorough investigation. We hope that it will lead to the apprehension, trial and conviction of the culprit or culprits.”
