Boston Jews Launch Campaign for $1,258,000 for Jewish Philanthropies

With “Sacrifice for Victory” as its slogan, Greater Boston embarked on its $1,258,000, 1942 Combined Appeal of the Associated Jewish Philanthropies and the United Jewish Campaign with a dinner at the Hotel Statler. Speakers were, Governor Levorett Saltonstall, Mayor Maurice J. Tobin, and Dorothy Thompson.

Louis E. Kirstein, president of the Associated Jewish Philanthropies, in a massage calling for sacrifices, said. “What we are asked to do is negligible beside what the millions of our boys in service are doing and will do. Theirs is a contribution of broken homes and broken cancers, of blood and pain, of life itself. While they fight for freedom on the war front, we must preserve and keep for them the human values of home and community they have left. Some day, please God, they will return.”
