Brazilian Jews asked their Government to suspend the executions of Iraqi Jews reportedly sentenced to death on charges of espionage for Israel and to permit those Jews, who so desire, to emigrate from Iraq. A delegation from the Brazilian Jewish Confederation, was received by Foreign Minister Magalhaes Pinto. They said later that the minister expressed “understanding and helpfulness.” The organization also cabled an appeal to United Nations Secretary General U Thant to intercede on behalf of the condemned Iraqi Jews and others facing trial. Their message stressed that “spilling more blood could only harm the prospects for peace and justice in the Middle East.”
