A resolution was adopted here by the Confederation of Jewish Communities in Brazil, opposing the opening of a bureau in this country by B’nai B’rith. “It has been shown that activities of B’nai B’rith in countries outside North America are not always in the interests of the local Jewish communities. The establishment of a B’nai B’rith bureau here would constitute an uninvited intervention in the inner affairs of the Brazilian Jewish community, ” the resolution stated.
Explaining the position of the Confederation, President Moyses Kauffmann said that the objection to the establishment of a B’nai B’rith office here “is based on standing policy to oppose offices of this kind of outside organization. ” He added that exceptions are made when such offices are believed to be “essential” but “only within the framework of the Confederation.”
He stressed that relations between the Confederation and B’nai B’rith remained friendly and harmonious and that many B’nai B’rith leaders were distinguished members of the Confederation’s executive.
