Bread rationing, which was introduced in Palestine in April, Has become unnecessary as a result of the substantial reserves of wheat in the country, it was reported here today at a session of the Jewish National Council of Palestine.
A review of the supply situation in Palestine was given at the session by Eliezer Kaplan, treasurer of the Jewish Agency for Palestine. Mr. Kaplan disclosed that during the first quarter of 1942 the Palestine imports were more than double those of the same period last year. Commodities valued at $22,000,000 were brought into Palestine in the first three months of this year, he reported. What Palestine needs now is more raw material for industrial work as well as more qualified workers, he said.
The session decided to elect a central supply committee for the purpose of cooperating with the economic department of the Jewish Agency on problems concerning the Yishuv’s food supply. Isaac Ben-Zvi, president of the Jewish National Council, eulogized Abraham Goldberg, the late American Zionist leader, at the session. A memorial meeting for Goldberg was also held by the Association of Jewish Journalists in Palestine.
