The British Cabinet was understood today to have decided to maintain the closest contact with the United States Government on the Egyptian arms situation, following the presentation of a report by Foreign Secretary Harold Macmillan, who had just returned from Washington where he had conferred with Secretary of State Dulles, French Foreign Minister Antoine Pinay and Soviet Foreign Minister V.M. Molotov over the matter.
In the past there have been hints of divergencies between the U.S. and Britain over Middle Eastern policy, particularly over U.S. moves in relation to Egypt without prior consultation with the British Government. This feeling, it is understood, was not altogether erased by last week’s joint Dulles-Macmillan statements on the Middle East.
Meanwhile, Israel Ambassador Eliahu Elath called today on Foreign Under Secretary Evelyn Shuckburgh who gave Mr. Elath an “explanation” of the recent Foreign Ministers’ meeting in the U.S., which he attended. Mr. Elath is believed to have given the British diplomat Israel’s views on the Czech-Egyptian arms deal.
