The conditions under which Britain would go to the assistance of Jordan against “aggression” by Israeli forces were outlined by Foreign Undersecretary Anthony Nutting, in a written statement to P.A.D. Baker, Conservative M.P.
The Undersecretary carefully outlined provisions of the British-Jordan treaty of alliance which involves the two states acting in concert to settle by peaceful means disputes between one of them and a third party and the conditions under which one will come to the assistance of the other in the case of hostilities.
Mr. Nutting’s statement also detailed what Britain had done in bringing the recent Kibya incident before the United Nations Security Council and recalled Britain’s acceptance of responsibility to prevent aggression under the Tripartite Declaration of 1950.
