Labor and Conservative M.P.’s today raised the question of Egypt’s anti-Israel blockade of the Suez Canal in Commons and demanded that the British Government take immediate action to force Egypt to open the canal to international traffic.

Replying to Laborite Barnett Janner and Conservative Fitzroy Maclean, Foreign Undersecretary Anthony Nutting asked the House not to press for immediate action because the Suez Canal issue had wider ramifications than the Egyptian-Israel or Egyptian-British disputes. He said that the issue involved worldwide interests and that the British Government would do everything possible to insure that British interests and international law would be upheld.
